I first saw Headlong‘s work at the 2004 Live Arts Festival. I walked away from Hotel Pool overwhelmed. I had never seen a show like it. Soon after that performance, my wife started dancing with Headlong and I got to know the Co-Directors -- David, Amy and Andrew -- personally. That‘s when I had the idea to make a film about them. I wanted to understand the creative process behind one of their pieces.
I also wanted to understand how and why these three people with such distinct personalities and ideas make collective decisions and work within a collaborative structure. What was gained and at what cost?
They gave me unlimited access. They gave me their trust and friendship. For that I‘ll always be grateful.
I approached them soon after I met Tere O‘Connor. I had a hunch that his participation in their process would result in a provocative look at alternative modes of creative investigation and collaboration.
Finally, the trust that the dancers showed to me and their willingness to remain vulnerable in and out of rehearsal, with a camera ever present, was humbling. I learned an enormous amount about dance and performance by simply observing them.
